BREAKING NEWS – COVID-19

Following an update from Cricket West this morning (the governing body for all associations including the SMCA- ALL grand finals and cricket this weekend have been cancelled.

Our First Grade grand final against CBC has been cancelled effective immediately along with all other grades.

This is unprecedented in our great Club’s 100-year history and many questions will be answered in the coming days.

This message below comes directly from the SMCA – the South Metropolitan Cricket Association in which we compete in relation to the Coronavirus pandemic –

It is with great sadness that I must inform our member Clubs that season 2019/2020 has been abandoned effective immediately. This is not a decision that anyone has taken lightly, from Cricket Australia to the WACA to CricketWest, but the health and safety of our players, umpires, supporters, volunteers and wider SMCA family members is paramount. The advice and guidance that the SMCA has received makes it very clear what we must do.

It means that the Grand Finals scheduled for this weekend will not go ahead as planned. It also means that tonight’s SMCA Windup, along with the Jim McKenna and Ian Hale medal counts, in its current format will be cancelled.

This is a situation that has never been faced before, and the official information and advice is changing on an almost hourly basis. The most pressing concern is the health of those involved in the SMCA, everything else is secondary.

In the coming days, myself and the rest of the SMCA Committee, will determine if, when and how our Best and Fairest players and teams will be awarded and acknowledged, and how the Association tackles the challenges that cloud the future. Fortunately, these matters are not as pressing as those concerning our health, so the Committee can consult widely to ensure that the decisions we make are in the best interests of the SMCA and the wider cricket community.
